The meaning of symbols change, sometimes from a religious meaning to one synonymous with hatred, such as the swastika. In recent history, the swastika was used as a symbol for Hitler’s Third Reich, under whose emblem an approximate six million Jews, Poles, Gypsies, and other were exterminated. Originally the swastika was not a symbol of hate or murder, it was a religious symbol used by different peoples at different times going back to early civilizations. It is still used today in Hindu homes as a religious symbol, not much unlike the Christian cross or the Jewish star of David. The swastika, again is going through a metamorphosis transformation, especially as the Anti-Defamation League has downgraded the swastika as a Jewish hate symbol. The swastika is still considered a symbol of hate, but not one that specifically targets Jews, it is has broaden it’s horizon to other minorities so to speak.

But the swastika is not the only Nazi symbol that is going through a similar change in meaning, Hitler himself is getting a PR make over. During World Ware II, Hitler was portrayed in American propaganda posters as an tyrannical ape, evil incarnate, or a diabolical villain. In 2005 Prince Harry of Wales has been photograph wearing a Halloween costume of a Nazi soldier. Socialite Paris Hilton was seen doing what seemed like a Nazi salute at a club in 2010. By no means would I ever consider Prince Harry or Paris Hilton as Nazi sympathizers so people are left with the question, why did they behave as such?

There is a growing number of viral internet memes that juxtapose Hitler and something considered cute, like kittens. There is a website devoted to Cats that Look Like Hitler. The website has all sorts of pictures with whose hair color make it resemble the Fuhrer. Another internet meme is that of a little kid dressed up as Hitler himself holding a near empty glass of orange juice with the LOL caption that reads I HAVE ELIMINATED ALL THE JUICE. Another popular Hitler viral meme is to take the clip from the movie The Downfall where Hitler throws a tantrum and dub it in English about some other current event such as the BP oil spill.

I Have Eliminated All The Juice

Is Hitler funny? I don’t think Hitler would have doing well in The Last Comic Standing but many are remixing a dark sense of humor with elements of the Third Reich. The swastika, the Nazi symbol, and even Hitler himself are being transformed via viral internet memes to a degree that even the Anti-Defamation League might one day even downgrade Hitler himself as a Jewish hate symbol.

Users naturally get upset when someone pulls a bait and switch wool over their eyes and put in place a subscription model on what used to be free content. Building a community and building a business around a community are not the same thing. This is especially true when a community organically develops around a previously free model. People invest their time and energy around the community but as soon as a pay wall goes up the social contract gets replace with a bottom line. I understand that people need to make money, we don’t like in communist Russia, but lets not forget that communist China is the fastest growing economy.

Andrew Warner, the founder of the startup and entrepreneurship focused site Mixergy, changed his site so that content older than a week is only available to paid subscribers. There is nothing wrong with making a buck, and I am sure he will do okay, but by making a quick buck we actually short our users. Funny enough, Andrew has interviewed dozens of successful entrepreneurs that have made a successful business by providing free content to build a platform to spring board their business.

Leo Laporte has built a podcasting empire with shows like This Week in Tech, MacBreak Weekly, Security Now, FLOSS Weekly and many more. Leo podcasts are ad supported and he spent a lot of time in making sure the ads are relevant to his audience. Another example and another entrepreneur whom Andrew has interviewed is Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary started out by making video reviews of wines for his blog. The video reviews where free but they where also presented and sponsored by his real business Wine Library. Gary has now moved on to write a book Crush It! A similar story can be told of Seth Godin. Seth writes freely available essays on his blog and writes a large number of books based on his writing. Seth has also “spun off” several online business. It is important to make the mental distinction that the free blog, podcast, essays are distinct from the paid service, product, or business. You don’t monetize your community by slapping a price tag on them.

Newsday recently learned by putting up a pay wall to your content does not lead to immediate success. Newsday is a half a billion dollar business and recently made the move to make their content online accessible to paid subscribers for a $5/week subscription. It is reported that after three months Newsday was able to sign up a mere 35 subscribers. I know Andrew will fair better than Newsday, there are a lot of passionate startup founders and entrepreneurs, but the complete and utter failure of Newsday is worth nothing. Subscription model to web content is not an original idea. It is not a purple cow, it will not help you get viral, it introduces money to the equation and money has a different expectation.

NASA astronaut Mike Massimino, may have not been the first person in space or on the moon. He was the first person to use the social networking site Twitter from space. One short message for man, one tweet for mankind. His tweet from outer spaces reads as follows.

From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!

As of date, Astronaut Mike Massimino has over 1.3 million followers. NASA’s official verified account lists 19 astronauts on Twitter, including astronaut Jose Hernandez. Astronaut Jose Hernandez was the first person to tweet from space in English and Spanish. As a Mexican-American, Joe Hernandez, tweets in both English and Spanish about his training and experience. Here is his first tweet from space.

Settling in and realizing my dream… Micro G is great. Finished setting up the computers and ready for bed! Don’t need pillow!

A minute later, he tweeted in Spanish.

Espero la cosecha de mi sueno sirva como inspiracion a todos! Acabo de configurar las computadoras. Buenas noches!

Current NASA astro twitterers include TJ Creamer, Soichi Noguichi, and Jeff Williams. Astronaut Soichi Noguichi is a currently in space on the International Space Station and is the most prolific twitterer. Many of his numerous tweets include twitpics from pictures he has taken from space. Seeing his profile page on twitpic is just awe inspiring.

Sometimes I see some thoughtlessness on behalf parents, it seems that sometimes the parents have just given up on parenting. I often see kids running up and down and into people at department stores. But the worst parenting behavior is that one when the parent does not realize the potential hazard of the situation. Here is my number one common sense parenting advice. Never play football with your kid in the street near a blind turn, especially in what is considered a quite street. If you think the street is quite, so will some crazy teenager driving taking that turn at 45 mph while sexting on his phone.

It took me about a day an half to get on Google Buzz after it was announced. The first thing I noticed was that I was already following a half dozen accounts and worst off that some people where following who I had only emailed but a few times. Google Buzz’s first failure was that it auto-followed certain contacts in your address book based on some ‘algorithm.’ The second mistake in Google Buzz was that it pushes you to make your profile public, even an experienced social media maven can inadvertently make their profile page public. A third oversight in Google Buzz is that your profile name is your email address. The fourth mistake is you can see, by default, the people that other people are followings and their followers. There are many more mistakes and hiccups, like blocking not working correctly, and these have been covered many times over. The problems I have listed here have a perfect privacy shit storm. The Eric Schmidt, CEO of “do no evil” Google, has defended Buzz and their lack of privacy awareness as a end user confusion. So maybe this is the perfect Schmidt storm as I don’t think he is using Google Buzz.

It was reported that the Google boss said the following:

I would say that we did not understand how to communicate Google Buzz and its privacy. There was a lot of confusion when it came out… [last] Tuesday, and people thought that somehow we were publishing their email addresses and private information, which was not true.

Eric Schmidt is either a liar or a dummy, pick any two! With the issues outlined above, it is possible to find out peoples email address, and worst, find out people close to however you are virtually stalking, I mean friending. Let’s take a public example, let’s see if we can find Mark Zuckerberg’s close contacts and email address using Google Buzz.

First you will need to log into your GMail account and click into the Buzz inbox. If this is your first time, you will probably already have a few followers. Under the text area to enter your buzz, you will see a link that reads ‘Find people.’ There is a search box where you can find more people to follow. In this box, enter Mark Zuckerberg. Mark of Facebook fame should be one of the first few people that comes up. Originally I was going to do this experiment with Eric Schmidt but I had a tougher time finding his profile. You can follow Mark or view his public profile. Mark is probably busy playing Farm Ville or working on new Twitter features to copy so he probably has not configured the privacy settings of his Google Buzz account.

It might also be worth while to question if this is the real Mark Zuckerberg, we can not be sure, but if you see the people that are following this profile you will see that very connected Silicon Valley technologists are following this person.

Mark Zuckerberg's Google Buzz contacts

In Mark’s public profile you will see that he is currently following 16 people. A quick glance of said followers shows Mark Zuckerberg is following Charles Cheever, Dustin Moskovitz, Adam D’Angelo, Paul Buchheit, amongst others. So now you can do this to each person that Mark follows on Google Buzz, etc. and easily develop a social graph of people Mark Zuckerberg contacts and connects with via email. Looking these folks up, on Google, you will find that they are early Facebook founders and fellow Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.

If you click on his public profile you will see that his Google Profile vanity URL is the following.

http://www.google.com/profiles/mark.zuckerberg#buzz

Notice his user name, mark.zuckerberg. If you append “@gmail.com” to his profile name, you will get Mark Zuckerberg’s GMail address. Feel free to send him a note telling him how much you enjoy getting updates about your friends finding alien cows on Facebook. Mark is a private guy, I mean you can’t just add Mark Zuckerberg as a friend through his Facebook profile page. As the founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark is tech savvy so I can’t imagine him intentionally making his GMail address publicly available.

It is evident, that Eric Schmidt is not aware how easily it is to find private email address of Google Buzz users or he is lying. I think that Google should change their motto from “do no evil” to “it’s okay to do dumb shit with your privacy.” What I can’t believe is that apparently Google Buzz was in use inside of Google and by some of their 20,000++ super genius bar qualified engineers for a year or so and no one caught this.

Mark Zuckerberg's Friends on Google Buzz

I rember reading back in 2007 how the riches men and woman made billions that year. Now it is a different story. It is estimated the Carlos Slim Helu and Warren Buffett both lost $25 billion invidivually, and Bill Gates has lost an additional $18. Last year the world had 1,125 billionaries. Today there are 793 and $1.4 trillion has simply disappeared. Here are some other billion dollar losers: Anil Ambani, Lakshmi Mittal, Kushal Pal Singh, Oleg Deripaska, Mukesh Ambani, and Sheldon Adelson.

There has been a lot of talk and excitement around Twitter recently, it all reach a new high when Oprah Winfrey dedicated a portion on her television program to Twitter. Some stats that followed the airing of the show indicated that as much as 1 million new users signed up to Twitter. Stats that followed after the Oprah Effect died down indicated that as much as 60 percent of new users don’t use the service after a month.
I can attest that this was true for me too! I joined Twitter before they went mainstream, before the most celebrities ever heard of it, and before it was a marketeer next marketing gimmick. What I came to realize is that when you first join a new community, at first you just lurk until you feel comfortable with the acceptable behavior in the community and the functionality of the service. This is definitely true in developing communities before the trolls and marketeers arrive.
The Twitter community has matured to shape features in the site, such as the @username reply mechanism and search friendly #hashtags. And Twitter is still evolving to meet users demands. But what will help you get the most out of Twitter has nothing to do with technology, but finding your tweet voice. Find your tweet voice, tune it, and experiment with it especially since Twitter makes it so easy. Don’t take the ‘What are you doing?’ question asked by Twitter too literal, use it as a suggestion, an ice breaker. Instead ask yourself, how am I going to change my world? What is my value add? Who am I going to connect with today? What matters to me the most?
Once you find your voice, you will need to find people to follow. The trick I like to use is I follow those that people I trust follow. For example, follow the folks that celebrities follow. All the mobile, desktop, and web clients to Twitter make it easy to always stay tune to your followers, use the favorite feature to save tweets that are interesting to you, reply and retweet to tweets add value to the conversation.
The key to twitter is to find followers and find hour voice.
